SFB 1181:  Checkpoints for Resolution of Inflammation

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 2015 to 2024

Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 261193037

Inflammation is the most important defense strategy of the body. Inflammation needs to be resolved, when no longer needed. Impaired resolution of inflammation leads to chronic diseases like arthritis, colitis and asthma. CRC1181 aims to define the mechanism of resolution of inflammation and to identify pathways that support the resolution process as well as those that overcome resolution and lead to chronicity of inflammation. In the last two funding periods we have defined critical nodes that control tissue specific resolution of inflammation. Furthermore, new methods have been developed that allow to study the dynamics of inflammation in vivo. In addition, therapeutic approaches have been discovered that foster resolution of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. In the third funding period, we will leverage on (i) new insights in the immune metabolism during resolution of inflammation, (ii) therapeutic approaches to allow reset of inflammation and (iii) technologies that provide an unprecedented view in tissue changes during inflammation. To accomplish these goals CRC1181 has substantially restructured its team of scientists and has integrated new technologies. This strategy will push innovation and create new insights in the mechanisms and therapeutic approaches to stop inflammation in human disease during the third funding period.
