GRK 535:  Groups and Geometry

Subject Area Mathematics
Term from 1999 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 272813

Project Description

The modern development of mathematics is determined by a stillincreasing integration of its parts. The important developments aretaking place more and more at the intersection of different mathematical disciplines. To contribute to these developments today therefore requires a very broad mathematical knowledge not restricted to one mathematical discipline. The aim of the research training group "Gruppen und Geometrie" is to create a curriculum in pure mathematics which satisfies these requirements. The theme "Gruppen und Geometrie" describes central points of view for all mathematical groups taking part in this project, in particular algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, number theory, representation theory, differential geometry, the theory of dynamical systems and global analysis. The aim of the research training group is to help the participating students to obtain insight into these different topics from the foundations up to recent developments. Besides the activities in the chosen special fields this is considered to be a necessary requirement for an original contribution to research.
