Structure development and micromechanical-electrochemical coupling of hierarchical nanoporous solids (B08)

Subject Area Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Synthesis and Properties of Functional Materials
Term from 2016 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 192346071

Subproject B8 aims to understand how varying length-scales influence the electro-chemo-mechanical coupling of nanoporous materials. In situ microcompression testing within an electrochemical environment allows the uniaxial deformation of micron-sized columns with simultaneous control of the electrical potential at the sample surface. Importantly, the induced actuation is decoupled from the change in mechanical properties due an applied potential. Furthermore, the dependence of the functionality of porous metals or semiconductors with a hierarchical microstructure on the sample volume is investigated in order to identify transitions in behavior between hierarchical scales.
