SPP 1179:  Organocatalysis

Subject Area Chemistry
Term from 2005 to 2014
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5472190

Organocatalysis is the catalysis of chemical reactions with small organic molecules. Typically, a metal is neither part of the catalytic principle, nor the substrate of the reaction. Traditionally, chemists have almost exclusively used metal-based catalysts. This surprises in light of the fact that half of all enzymes, nature s powerful catalysts, are metal-free. Only since very recently it has been generally realised that low-molecular weight, purely organic compounds can catalyse chemical reactions highly effectively and selectively. The goal of this Priority Programme is to develop new organocatalytic processes, to understand their mechanism, and to use organocatalytic methodology in synthesis.
