SFB 533:  Lichtinduzierte Dynamik von Biopolymeren

Subject Area Biology
Term from 1997 to 2007
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481326

Project Description

The collaborative research centre 533 studies dynamic processes in biopolymers, in particular conformational changes in proteins, on a time-scale of femtoseconds to seconds. These processes are crucial to their function, their folding, and intra- as well as inter-molecular interactions. They include relaxations after perturbations, as well as fluctuations around their equilibria. The collaborative research centre 533 focuses in its work on perturbations by light, because they provide unique access to the fastest time-scales. In contrast to the well-known static structures on many proteins, we are just beginning to understand their dynamic structures and, likewise is the computational treatment very limited. Progress during the second funding period terminating in 2002, is based equally on advances in biochemical preparation, in spectroscopic techniques and in computational treatment. We have improved our general understanding of protein dynamics as well as detailed their functions in the selected systems, thereby strenghtening the concept of the collaborative research centre.
