SFB 520:  Dealing with Social Transformation in African Societies

Subject Area Humanities
Term from 1999 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5483610

Collaborative research centre 520 examines the causes, development and consequences of social transformation in African societies. Africa is a continent where nations are perhaps not as stable as those in other continents. This results not only in increased hardship for the citizens, but also in the development of a variety of concepts for the solution of conflicts. These approaches are thoroughly analysed. The projects based in Africa are designed in close cooperation with local researchers to allow an exchange of the different research perspectives.Europe is inevitably involved in the social development in Africa due to the history of colonisation as well as current political and economical pressure. For this reason the connections between Africa and Europe are analysed closely to understand better the complex interplay of causes and consequences of transformation processes. This aspect is particularly important for the projects based in Hamburg. Hamburg has about 30,000 citizens of African descent.
