SFB 486:  Manipulation of matter at the nanometer length scale

Subject Area Physics
Biology
Chemistry
Medicine
Term from 2000 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5483795

Trans disciplinary basic research with the focus on potential applications in nanotechnology are program and goal of this collaborative research centre. The rapid pace of miniaturization in semiconductor technology paves the road towards manipulation of matter at the nanometer length scale, and even at molecular dimensions. At the same time modern research on biological, chemical or physical systems is increasingly focussing on mesoscopic dimensions. The goal of the collaborative research centre 486 is to bundle activities in the different disciplines in a joint effort to manipulate matter at the nanometer length scale and to investigate the fundamental mechanisms. Manipulation means local influence, creation of novel structures and active control. This collaborative research centre plays a key role in the development and in the use of novel molecular tools and models as well as in the investigation of nanoscopic systems from Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
