To get control of changes in shape and dimension (distortion) of a component during manufacture for the purpose of a "distortion engineering", it is essential to investigate systematically the mechanisms of distortion formation, to identify and influence directly their interdependence. To attain this goal, distortion must be viewed as system quality, interrelations of the involved areas must be identified and their effects must be understood.
Viewed altogether, new grounds must be broken. The first step of the implementation is the identification of the relevant system parameters. In the next step, the critical system parameters must be measured and documented. The last and most important step is to activate an optimised production chain by communication between all parties participating in the production of a component. This production chain can react flexibly to changes in the process parameters by permanent process control by appropriate sensors. In addition to the experiment, the process simulation (today a highly developed tool) has to be used because of the multitude of possible parameters.
