Indian Hedgehog (Ihh) controls proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes and prevents tumour progression and metastasis. Mechanistically, complex epidermal hedgehog function is mediated by the interplay of Gli2 and Gli3 transcription factors. This project uses Hedgehog signalling as paradigm to address the fundamental question how canonical signalling pathways can on one hand induce an uniform cell response and on the other hand excite a variety of different and cell type-specific activities to both, maintain tissue homeostasis and contribute to disease formation.
