Solvated Electrons in Liquid Jets of Water

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2009 to 2010
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 113069791

The aim of the proposed postdoctoral stay is to set up a new experiment to measure the energetics and time-resolved dynamics of solvated electrons in liquid microjets of water. These studies will link the vast literature on hydrated electrons in solution and the growing experimental and theoretical body of work on excess electrons in water clusters. The unique properties of liquid microjets enable us to perform one-photon and time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) on bulk water. We plan to measure the vertical binding energy (VBE) of electrons in bulk water by one-photon PES of hydrated electrons in water jets, thereby testing the validity of extrapolating VBE's of water cluster anions to the bulk hydrated electron. This will be followed by time-resolved PES experiments that will determine the excited state lifetime of hydrated electrons in water jets, linking time-resolved experiments in cluster anions to transient absorption measurements on aqueous hydrated electrons and providing new insights into their relaxation dynamics.
