Bündelantrag: "Scientific Collaboration On Past Speciation Conditions in Ohrid (SCOPSCO)": Palaeotemperature reconstruction and project coordination assistance
Final Report Abstract
The coordination assistance requested within the frame of the project here reported contributed significantly to the success of the ICDP drilling project. Coring campaigns were carried out in 2011 and 2013. In 2011, one of the five proposed drill sites was successfully cored using UWITEC technology. Deep drilling at the other sites using DOSECC technology was delayed due to a financial shortfall, increasing costs of the drilling operation, and an accident of the container vessel, which transported the coring equipment from the U.S. to Europe. Finally, with more than 2100 m of sediments recovered from Lake Ohrid and a maximum sediment depth of 568 m below lake floor, the SCOPSCO project became one of the most successful ICDP lake drilling campaigns in the past. Besides the quantity of the cores recovered, also the quality of the cores is apparently very good. Based on preliminary data, the record from the DEEP site covers at least 1.2 Ma and forms the backbone for scientific studies on the environmental change in the region, the establishment of a regional tephrostratigraphy and the investigation of potential triggers of speciation and evolution, which are carried out within the scope of the international SCOPSCO project. This success of the drilling campaign is based on the thorough preparation and coordination of the drilling campaign and on the excellent collaboration of the scientific party involved in the SCOPSCO project. The scientific results of presite surveys at Lake Ohrid are documented in a large number of international, peer-reviewed publications, which resulted at least partly also from the project applied for here. The scientific results of the quantitative temperature reconstruction based on TEX86 measurements are in progress and will be published in the near future.
