Scientific coordination in the Priority Programme SPP 1420 "Biomimetic Materials Research: Functionality by Hierarchical Structuring of Materials"

Subject Area Synthesis and Properties of Functional Materials
Term from 2009 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 127221280

The aim of the priority programme is to explore the possibility of generating new material families of great potential by combining the degrees of freedom of hierarchical structuring (inspired by nature) with the variety of materials offered by engineering. The programme shall accelerate the innovation in the field of biomimetic materials research by increasing the understanding and interaction between scientists from different disciplines, materials science and engineering on the one hand and biology/biomechanics on the other, thereby supporting the integration of their different expertises, methods and approaches. To meet this challenge, education and training of young scientists is a major requirement and needs special measures, such as1. A biennial winter school (with international participation).2. An academy for young scientists with additional mentoring on career planning (“Nachwuchsakademie”)3. Three grants for a one-year, high-risk project submitted by a young investigator at the occasion of the “Nachwuchsakademie”4. Exchange visits of young scientists to other groups in the SPP (roughly following the model of the “short-term missions” in COST programmes)5. Organisation of annual dedicated symposia at the MSE or Euromat (with varying special focus)6. A web page with informationBiennial review colloquia
