25 years after their first experimental demonstration at Bell Labs, solitons are now used in commercial telecommunication systems. Given the unabatedly growing demand, a next generation of such systems might involve coupled states of solitons, so-called soliton molecules, which were demonstrated 3 years ago in Rostock. The project aims for an exploration of fundamental limitations to soliton molecule stability, in order to decide on the feasibility of their use in future telecommunication systems. Systematic experiments and numerical studies will be performed; novel experimental and mathematical techniques, developed by the applicant, will be brought to bear.
