Final Report Abstract

Thalassiosira pseudonana was used as model diatom in order to investigate the connectivity of availability of nutrients and the synthesis of dimethylsulfoniumpropionate (DMSP)-synthesis. DMSP plays a role in many physiological aspects, e.g. as osmolyte and biogeochemical recycling of sulfur. In the latter process DMSP plays a major role in influencing the climate in form of a crystallisation kernel for clouds/ rain formation. Current results let assume that the provision of carbon is one factor influencing the synthesis of DMSP indicating that with increasing carbon levels DMSP levels decrease. To support this finding parameter such as levels of CO2, nitrogen, iron, and salt were varied to investigate the underlying regulatory mechanism by studying metabolite levels and gene expression analysis. Bioinformatic methods were used for the analyses. With this approach for the first time metabolites of the primary metabolism, storage metabolism and metabolites of the sulfur metabolism were investigated to elucidate DMSP-synthesis regulation in Thalassiosira pseudonana.
