Motion is the most fascinating state of existence of matter, its mathematical description is one of the fundamental aims in physics.
The members of the Research Unit have a common interest in systems, whose dynamics can be modelled in terms of a continuum theory. Within this framework specific kinds of complex fluids are investigated, whose equations of motion are still part of the modelling.
This Research Unit is specialising in concentrated suspensions and gels. Within these specifications they are dealing with a wide spectrum of complex matter, ranging from biological cells, liquid crystal and magnetic gels to sand suspensions. However, it is assumed that nevertheless a united model concept can be found - a continuum theory.
It is assumed that some insight can be gained particularly from the interdisciplinary cooperation in this group, which links fields of experimental physics, chemistry, technical mechanics and theoretical physics.
Five research projects are funded:
-- Rheology of Suspensions and the Glass Transition
-- Formation of Rippels under Shear Flow / Strain
-- Thermally Reversible Liquid Crystal Gels under the Influence of Electrical Fields
-- Surface Instabilities in Magnetic Gels
-- Rheology and Dynamics of Active Biopolymer Networks
