Exchange processes in mountainous regions; Turbulence and stand-scale modelling

Subject Area Atmospheric Science
Term from 2009 to 2014
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 135270131

Within this sub-project the physical, and also in part chemical, processes on the stand scale will be studied by experimental and modelling activities. The following processes will be investigated at the forest site and at the forest edge with eddy-covariance and profile techniques and several statistical tools: turbulent fluxes, coherent structures, footprints, coupling of the atmosphere and the canopy, advection, exchange coefficients, scalar similarity to chemical fluxes, and quality control of all data and uncertainties. Within the project the higher order closure model ACASA will also be applied as well a gas flux model for the soil and several footprint models and approaches. The project supports all of the other projects of the bundle application with meteorological input data and interpretation tools for the complicated turbulent exchange or advection processes in and above the forest and at the forest edge. Furthermore, forcing parameters for all model studies (measured and modelled data) will be made available. Together with the LES simulation carried out in another subproject, a complete description of the turbulent exchange processes and of secondary circulation on the stand to catchment scale will be made available. The main aim is to investigate how the fluxes change in a disturbed forest ecosystem.
