Final Report Abstract

The project under report provides an important contribution to the study of electron dynamics in the process of ionization of atomic systems. This contribution comprises the following aspects:  Direct experimental demonstration of the orbital alignment effect in atoms generated in the process of photodetachment of their negative ions.  Revealing the dynamic character of orbital alignment, which leads to a periodic spatial rearrangement of the electron cloud in the laser-generated atom. The coherence condition for initiating the periodic electron dynamics is shown to require the laser pulse length being shorter that the spin-orbit period of the bound atomic state. Development of the strong-field ionization probe technique for monitoring in real time of the electron density angular distribution in bound atomic and molecular states. The first observation of the electron rescattering effect in the process of strong-field photodetachment of an atomic system with a short-range potential. This effect is shown to be more prominent in photodetachment of heavier negative ions due to the larger core. Revealing the complicated dynamics of strong-field photodetachment of molecular anions that involves photodissociation channels. Photodissociation prevented experimental verification of the dressed and the undressed versions of the molecular strong-field approximation. Revealing the exponential dependency of the photodetachmnet cross section near threshold in the presence of a repulsive polarization potential in the final electron state. Demonstration that the photodetachment channel with the formation of the residual atom in a higher-lying state is more efficient in the study of doubly excited states of negative ions. The use of different channels was shown to be more informative in the determination of the electronic structure of negative ions.
