Funds are being requested here to finance a substitute to cover the proponents teaching load for summer semester 2010 and travel costs to other institutes in the U.S. to carry out joint research on intraplate volcanism and prepare publications. The planned activities during the research semester include 1) participation, as chief scientist, in a R/V Meteor cruise M81/2 (from Recife, Brazil on 24.03.2010 to Colon, Panama on 10.05.2010) to carry out ROV sampling and magnetic studies of the Caribbean Large Igneous Province, 2) preparation, together with American colleagues, and participation, as chief scientist, in a R/V Sonne 208 cruise (from Caldera, Costa Rica on 29.07.2010 to Guayaquil, Ecuador on 12.09.2010) to investigate plume-ridge interaction through time at the Galapagos (Cocos-Nazca) Spreading Center, and 3) preparation of publications with colleagues in College Station Texas, San Diego State University, Universities of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Santa Cruz (UCSC) on intraplate volcanism in the eastern North Atlantic and plume-ridge interaction along the Galapagos Spreading Center.
