Final Report Abstract

Photoresponsive monomers including photoremovable protecting groups allow activation of polymerization and depolymerisation reactions in polymeric backbones which are per se not photosensitive. Based on the selective response of different chromophores to light of different wavelength developed at the group in Strassbourg, polymeric materials with sequential activation of crosslinking and depolymerization steps independently were realized at MPIP in Mainz. These materials could be addressed with single and two photon excitation and applied to generate 2D and 3D patterns using masked exposure or scanning lasers. Taking into account that these chromophores are typically applied in experiments with living cells, we envision that this approach will not only be attractive for microfabrication, but also be applicable to biomaterials research. Work in this area is currently in progress at the group in Mainz.
