Final Report Abstract

The focus of this grant extension was on the ergonomic implications of manually interacting with visual displays, such as when using touch screens or hand-held devices. Indeed, prior research has shown that visual and cognitive processing can be influenced when people place their hands near visual displays. In light of these findings, we had three main objectives: (a) Establish how such hand-proximity effects change and potentially improve cognitive functions when the hands are used to interact with visual displays in meaningful ways, (b) investigate the influence of hand-proximity and manual interaction on basic visual functions, such as eye movements and binocular coordination, and (c) explore the influence of aging and individual differences on hand-proximity effects. A number of experiments were performed to address these issues. Unfortunately, we failed to find effects of hand proximity or did not observe consistent patterns of performance across experiments, despite having similar designs. This seems to be symptomatic of this line research and, although we have successfully resolved some of the apparent conflicts in this literature, more research will be needed to better understand under what conditions hand-proximity effects can be reliably obtained.
