Dynamic guard band assignment and resource allocation has been shown to be beneficial for multiple access interference (MAI) mitigation and performance improvement in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems compared to mere usage of guard intervals. However the conclusion is based on the assumption that user terminals (UTs) work in a single cell with similar traffic profile. However one can legitimately question the performance of this method in a multicell environment and under different traffic models and application requirement. We address the problem under new assumptions to examine the idea in more realistic situations. The problem of dynamic resource allocation and guard band assignments is considered for traffic aware and multicell scenarios. Firstly, the packet traffic awareness is considered by taking into account different traffic models and also different performance metrics beyond the throughput. The new metrics depend on the application in use and is defined using utility curves. Secondly, the model is extended from single-cell to multicell scenario, where MAI can be also caused by UTs from neighbor cells. It is discussed how the MAI can be reduced with or without cooperation between different cells. We will evaluate the performance of the system after taking these assumptions into account and we discuss different pros and cons of dynamic resource allocation methods.
