The research project deals with a central problem of Uto-Aztecan comparative phonology and is conducted in cooperation with the Department of Linguistics, University of California, Los Angeles. The Uto-Aztecan language family is one of the biggest linguistic units of indigenous America. The project shall provide insight into the family¿s internal classfication and thus into the linguistic prehistory of Western North America. Furthermore, the project serves a collection of extensive primary data of the moribund Uto-Aztecan language Cahuilla. Cahuilla is one of the last indigenous languages of Southern California still in use, less than 10 persons speak it as a mother tongue.
