This project aims at elucidating the role of acyl-carnitins in beta-oxidation and as signalling substances. With a newly developed assay we will trace fatty acids during beta-oxidation and follow with high time resolution and sensitivity the metabolism of the corresponding acyl-carnitins, as well as their transport between mitochondria and cytoplasm. Accumulation of acyl-carnitins is an indication of limiting capacity of beta-oxidation. Therefore, we will study a possible role of acyl-carnitins that are released from cells as signalling molecules in liver and adipose tissue.
