Near-field investigations of surface plasmon polaritons on metamaterials in the terahertz frequency range

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2010 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 164260466

The project aims at the theoretical and experimental investigation of the spatial propagation and lateral confinement of surface plasmon polaritons on specifically designed meta-surfaces. By judicious design of the metamaterial, complete control over the spatial propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in the plane of the meta-surface shall be achieved. The propagation of the surface plasmon polaritons is calculated based on three-dimensional numerical models. After successful numerical evaluation of the accomplished meta-surface designs, the meta-surfaces are fabricated by micro- and nano-fabrication methods and the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons is measured by spatially resolved terahertz near-field spectroscopy.
