Constructions of dying - Analysis of biographical and professional perspectives in the context of health and social services

Subject Area Education Systems and Educational Institutions
Term from 2010 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 167183561

The issue of dying presently attracts more and more social attention. An intention that implies the question of how an adequate patient-centered care can be organized appropriately by professionals, respecting the perspectives and needs of moribund patients. Nevertheless patient-centered care and patient-centered services cannot solve the challenges which arise during the process of dying for patients as well as for professionals in their institutional contexts. This target research project is based upon two perspectives: on one hand the perspective of dying people will be analyzed and on the other hand the perspectives of professionals confronted with dying will be reconstructed. It can be assumed that dying patients on one side and professionals on the other side have different constructions of knowledge and therefore different constructions of dying and that these different constructions have far-reaching consequences. With the help of both, biographical as well as expert interviews, these different constructions will be thoroughly analyzed. Moreover, the research project will pay special attention to the influence of institutions and their respective difference on how they deal with the organization of dying. In a third phase not only the institutional but also the cultural influences on the social construction of dying will be analysed.
