The main research goal of the International Research Training Group is to place current developments in a historical context and to localise global historical perspectives. With these goals in mind, a critical re-orientation of metropolitan studies is to be approached. Urban researchers, from a social science perspective, have studied the current interrelations between cities and globalisation for many years. The most new projects in the area of global history, in contrast, have only marginally focussed on these interrelations. While there are a number of studies focussing on, for example, international port cities or world exhibitions, a systematic definition of the connection between globalisation and cities is still lacking. In part, this is due to the lack of focus, even within historical urban studies, on global transformations since the 19th century. The research programme aims to close this research gap and offers a relevant contribution to interdisciplinary urban research, by focussing on four thematic areas: architecture and urban planning, migration and mobility, knowledge and communication, environment and sustainability. The qualification concept of the International Research Training Group Berlin - New York - Toronto aims to lead our graduate students in the preparation of excellent dissertations within the intended time period of three years. Furthermore, the programme aims to qualify the graduate students for the international job market, both academic and non-academic. Also the academic careers and further qualification of post-doctoral fellows are supported by the research programme and its members. Through the outstanding research network of the International Research Training Group, we are able to provide our young researchers with an interdisciplinary and international working environment. Our graduate students are able to carry out their studies transnational, both institutionally and in regard to the content of their research. The International Research Training Group aims to contribute to the training of a new generation of researchers, who are equally international academics and global citizens.
