IODP Leg 311, Cascadia Margin Hydrates, offers to improve and pilot use it s novel and unique pressurised sub sampling PRESS-ystem for pressurised down hole cores. Technische Universität Berlin has developed PRESS in the EU research project HYACINTH in 2001/2005. Feasibility of transfer and sub sampling tasks are being tested in April and May 2005 with good results. Additional contamination reduction and control as proposed shall improve the utility of PRESS for gas hydrate and geomicrobiological research in scientific ocean drilling. Contamination control applies methods of mechanics, fluid mechanics, materials, sterilisation and fluorescence. Pilot use is being planned in Victoria, British Columbia, October to November 2005, at the end and after scientific drilling with RV Joides Resolution. Co-operation with the Canadian Geological Survey, with IODP-TAMU, US and Japanese scientists of Leg 311 has been prepared. Downstream microbiological pressurised research equipment of HYACINTH, developed by Prof. John Parkes, University of Cardiff, shall also be used. An equivalent request for financial support is being presently submitted by J. Parkes at NERC, the UK National Environmental Research Council.
