Coordination Funds

Subject Area Thermodynamics and Kinetics as well as Properties of Phases and Microstructure of Materials
Term from 2010 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 179318574

The aim of the priority programme is to investigate and design new materials and components for lithium ion batteries in an interdisciplinary approach of materials scientists, electrochemists and physico-chemists. Additionally, the thermodynamic and kinetic modelling of heterogenuos materials reactions and phase transformations are in the main focus of the programme. Due to this highly interdisciplinary approach and due to the fact that most of the members of the priority programme did not collaborate before, the coordination work is of very high relevance for the success of this priority programme.A major task of this Priority Programme is the teaching, education and training of young scientists. Mainly PhD students and Post Docs will work on the individual research projects. The aim is to generate dedicated and perfectly trained specialists in the research and engineering areas of lithium ion batteries. To support these young scientists and to accomplish this stated aim the following initiatives are planned:Two-day workshops for Scientists, Post Docs, PhD students and students to discuss the latest results of research and coordinate activities. Two summer schools of three day duration will be organized in 2011 and 2012.Organization of annual symposia at the MSE and EUROMAT conferences, respectively.Exchange visits of young scientists to other research groups of the Priority Programme will be organized.Young investigator awards will be installed for best poster and best oral presentation. Also best publication in a peer-reviewed international journal will be appreciated.Additional activities are:Establish collaboration with other national and international initiatives on lithium ion batteriesEstablish and maintain a Priority Programme WebsiteRun the communication, data and information IT Platform: MSI LIBworksInitiate an industrial associationPromote and present scientific results at conferences and in journals and to the general publicOrganization of symposia on special materials science topics of lithium ion batteriesDevelop and organize a practical course on lithium ion batteries for students of secondary schoolsProvide intermediate and final reports to the German Research Foundation
