Project Details
Lagrangian Support of Stratospheric Operations of HALO (LASSO)
Applicant
Dr. Jens-Uwe Grooß
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
from 2010 to 2015
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 179733132
The goal of this project is to support measurement campaigns of the HALO aircraft by providing simulation forecasts. This will be done on the basis of ECMWF forecasts. The focus will be on Lagrangian simulations with the Chemical Lagrangian Model of the Stratosphere (CLaMS) as well as other relevant products as chemistry forecasts by the MACC/GEMS project will be provided. It is planned to directly support 3 envisaged HALO missions with stratospheric focus by having a CLaMS scientist present at the campaign base location. The provided simulations and also newly developed methods will help designing the flight patterns such that the possible scientific outcome of the observations on-board of HALO will be maximized. Also some help for optimizing time of year and location of intended campaigns will be given. A long-time simulation archive for the periods of HALO missions will be created to provide the basis for atmospheric science analyses.
