"Questions by St. Anselm about the Lord's Passion" --- digitization, analysis and edition of all German versions (14th-16th c.)

Subject Area Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics
Term from 2010 to 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 179943363

This project deals with the digital interpretation of the German textual tradition of a medieval treatise on the Passion, "St. Anselm's Questions for Mary" (54 handwritten and 10 printed documents from the 14th-16th centuries). As a result of the origins of the texts being unusually spread out---there are documents from the entire German speaking region, including Low German-speaking regions---the Anselm Corpus represents a unique resource. The texts, which are available as diplomatic transcriptions, will first be normalized semi-automatically, i.e., mapped onto modern word forms, and then annotated with lemma, morphology, part-of-speech, and syntactic information. The parallel texts will also be aligned at paragraph, sentence and word level. Then the texts and annotations will be made available as a digital edition, to be accessed using a web browser. Finally, methods will be developed to investigate linguistic variation between the parallel texts by computing relatedness at various linguistic levels (graphemic, lexical, syntactic).
