Integration of sensory and memory processing in the human medial temporal lobe (B08)

The aim of this project is twofold. First, I would like to understand how categorisation of different modalities (auditory and sensory) is processed in the human brain. Especially the different processes for categorisation of stimuli, that can be separated into prototype and exceptions, will be investigated. A second line of research will focus on the preparatory functions of the piriform cortex. This structure is one of the main parts of the brain that process olfactory stimuli. Recent results suggest, that the piriform cortex is activated in a preparatory way, e.g by visual imagery, even if no olfactory stimuli are presented. This phenomenon will be further investigated by varying stimuli and experimental parameters.
