Project Details
GRK 1729: Fundamentals and Applications of Ultra-cold Matter
Subject Area
Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term
from 2012 to 2016
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 180420535
The Research Training Group will thematically focus on both fundamental properties and applications of ultra-cold matter, joining the effort of a unique multi-disciplinary combination of theorists and experimentalists in atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, condensed-matter physics and metrology. The Research Training Group will investigate fundamental properties of quantum gases, with a particular interest in novel research directions as ultra-cold polar molecules, quantum degenerate alkaline-earth gases, non-classical states of matter and strongly-correlated atomic gases. The programme will also place special emphasis on the applications of ultra-cold matter, including atom interferometry, atomic sensors and atomic clocks. The central goal of the Research Training Group is to provide our PhD students with a deep understanding and broad overview of the area of cold matter while simultaneously involving them early in challenging forefront research. We aim at providing an excellent internationally competitive training combining well-designed courses and highly-motivating lectures by international visitors with innovative supervision and training concepts.
