Final Report Abstract

In a collaborative project between four research groups in Cologne, Heidelberg, Princeton and Oxford, a set of 1500 P-element insertion lines were created that allowed the visualization of localized transcripts of the randomly targeted genes in a range of different tissues. The insertion lines were screened for asymmetric RNA localization by the four participating labs and have been distributed to interested members of the scientific community. The most successful part of the screen was one in which the screening results were not only assessed qualitatively (‘asymmetric distribution’ versus ‘polarized distribution’), but for which a quantitative evaluation was established. This screen resulted in the discovery of a set of genes for which the transcripts were localized to dendrites or axons, and which were necessary for the proper morphogenesis of neurons.
