Final Report Abstract

Our overarching question of this project was “How does charge transport between inorganic NPs and their stabilizing shell made of organic semiconductors take place?” Until now we have two cases and two answers: 1. Semicondcuting inorganic particles coated with a monolayer of organic semicondcutor: investigations on OLEDs including such a layer showed the best performance within this series (however, with rather poor performance compared to the state of the art). 2. Metallic inorganic particles coated with a monolayer of organic semicondcutor: STM/STS measurements indicate seminconductive behavior, suggesting that charge transport takes place through the TPD‐layer, never entering the metallic core. This would be a result of the aliphatic chains necessary to chemically attach the TPR‐ligands prohibiting (efficient) charge transfer. On the other hand, OLEDs using a gold electrode modified by a SAM of the same ligands clearly show that charge transfer is indeed possible. Thus, unfortunately, after a lot of hard work at the end of the project there is not a clear answer to this question (yet)!
