This proposal seeks to better understand the development and evolution of convection in tropical environments, specifically examining the range of conditions which lead to local severe storms. This will be achieved by using a cloud-resolving model initialized with data from severe storm days, which have occurred in and around Darwin, a city in tropical Australia. This analysis is aimed at developing simple forecasting tools describing particular aspects of these storms, which are of utmost importance to weather forecasters in tropical regions.
