Study of Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons by means of fs-laser Faraday magnetometry

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2011 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 183069271

Subject of this project is the experimental investigation of the degree of coherence in the Bose-Einstein condensate – a recently discovered novel state of a magnon gas. A combined heterodyne scheme employing a repetitive sequence of fs-laser pulses, allowing an ultimate frequency resolution, will be applied as the experimental tool. The main question to answer will be: how the finite lifetime of magnons and their mutual interaction influences the coherent properties of the condensate. Here we plan to join the expertise of the Münster Group in experimental study of coherent magnon states with the excellence of the Nijmegen Group in investigation and manipulation of high frequency dynamics, magneto-optics and opto-magnetism.
