Structure and dynamics ofthe interfacial layer between ionic liquids and electrode materials

Subject Area Physical Chemistry of Molecules, Liquids and Interfaces, Biophysical Chemistry
Term from 2010 to 2014
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 186902953

The structure and dynamics of the interfacial layer between ionic liquids and varying electrode materials plays a major role for applications in the fields of electrochemical energy storage and metal deposition. However, until now neither the experimental characterisation of this interfacial layer nor its theoretical understanding has reached a satisfactory level. In this project, the interfacial layer between selected ionic liquids with highest purity and selected electrode materials (Pt, Au) will be analysed using different experimental methods. At first, the method of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy will be combined with STM and AFM methods. Later on, MIES and SFG will be used in addition. The aim is to distinguish between electrostatic double layer formation and adsorption processes, the latter inducing pseudocapacitive charge storage. The influence of slow adsorption processes on the faster double layer dynamics is to be analysed in detail. Eventually, information about the influence of temperature and dissolved lithium salts will be gained. The project ought to deliver reliable data on very pure and well characterised ionic liquids and thereby contribute to the further development of the existing double layer / interfacial layer theories.
