Core Project 3 “Instrumentation and Remote Sensing” provides comprehensive services and technical infrastructure to support research in the Biodiversity Exploratories (BE) program. Our efforts focus on several key areas: (i) As a focal point for advice and training, we promote the effective use of climate and environmental data for biodiversity research within the BE.ii) We maintain, operate and expand an extensive sensor network comprising more than 400 sensor stations in three regions of Germany. This network provides long-term consistent time series of environmental observations, including climate, acoustic and photographic data, for all the BE sampling areas.iii) We coordinate the collection and provision of geospatial data, including multispectral and multitemporal remote sensing datasets. These efforts are complemented by new area-wide ALS data and derived raster products on forest structure.iv) We perform preliminary and advanced processing of all climate and geospatial data and provide prepared datasets via customized and continuously improved data analysis modules integrated into the central data management system BExIS. These modules support the analysis of ecosystem functions and services at the plot and landscape level. In collaboration with the BExIS team and the synthesis team, we are developing a new climate data tool to analyze the ecological impacts of extreme climate events (ECEs) using both historical and current climate data.This approach underlines our commitment to the efficient use of climate and environmental data in biodiversity research. Core Project 3 is strongly service-oriented and provides the BE with both an important technical infrastructure and scientific expertise for the collection and analysis of environmental and remote sensing data.
