Final Report Abstract

The initial objective of the project was to explore the chemistry of novel nitrogen-containing species formed from the decomposition of covalent diazides. During the accomplishment of the project, the research was extended from diazides to triaizdes and monoazides, from which some very interesting novel nitrogen-containing compounds were also discovered. A number of exciting results have been obtained in cooperation with other research groups. The main results include (i) synthesis and properties of diazirinone (cycl-N2CO); (ii) preparation and characterization of novel triatomic molecules OPN/ONP and SPN/SNP/cycl-PSN; (iii) structural characterization of HC(O)N3, O2S(N3)2, OP(N3)3, and SP(N3)3; (iiii) generation of thermally persistent triplet nitrene species FSO2N.
