Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

We consider that our project in the Bündelantrag was a resounding success. We have successfully combined the GPS and seismic data to glean new insights about the mechanical behavior of the plate interface and we have developed new methods for assessing the importance of seismic and aseismic deformation in periods before and after the mainshock. We have been able to make strides in our understanding of the plate interface frictional heterogeneity, as well as being able to adapt the state of the art methods for improving the determination of the patterns of motion and locking on the plate interface. Our field campaigns have ensured that the exceptional database of GPS measurements that were available for our modeling efforts will be available and enhanced for future studies. The increase in the resolving power of plate interface behavior due to densification of the field measurements is revealing some very important spatial and temporal relationships, and we believe that the success of this project should encourage the community to embark on similar projects in the future. With the increase in available data comes the issues of timely processing - something that could have been improved if we had been able to allocate a funds to pay for such a position.
