Presuppositions of frame theory in the history of philosophy (A05)

Project A05 is generally concerned with a historical and systematical reconstruction and evaluation of frames as a universal format of representation. In the third period, we intend to focus our investigation on the notion of the type signature, which has precursors throughout the history of philosophy, most prominently in Aristotle’s genus-species scheme and subsequent accounts in medieval logic and semantics. We will analyze the assumptions and implications of interpreting the type signature epistemologically, as a model of our conceptual scheme, methodologically, as a general format for definitions, and metaphysically, as a classification of extra-conceptual reality.
