GRK 1412:  Cultural Orientations and Institutional Order in South-Eastern Europe

Subject Area History
Term from 2006 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 20107589

Since the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, South-Eastern European societies are characterised by the tension, to what extent the long-term cultural formation of the region allows for the incorporation of Western models of politics and society and whether the adaptation to the institutional order along Western lines is at all possible. During the last decade, the progressive approach of South-Eastern Europe toward the structures of European integration has increased the urgency of this issue.
The Research Training Group focusses on the tension between diverging cultural orientations within the societies in South-Eastern Europe and their institutional order. These tensions have dominated intellectual discourses as well as social, cultural, religious and political developments in the region for more than two centuries as well as our present imagination of South-Eastern Europe. In studying these developments, the Research Training Group focusses mainly on those countries, which have been culturally shaped by an age-old affiliation to the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires and which see this heritage as specific in their confrontation with Western Europe.
It is in these fields that the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena has developed and established special research and teaching competence, which dovetail with the religious sciences of the neighbouring University at Erfurt and the South-Eastern European Sociology at the Saxon Police Academy. In concentrating this competence, the Research Training Group shall form an internationally visible graduate centre, which will contribute substantially to a complex synopsis of micro- and macrostructures, continuity and discontinuity within the societies of South-Eastern Europe. It can pick up and rely on the existing study programme "South-Eastern European Studies", which exists at the University of Jena since 1997/98.
By establishing the Research Training Group, the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena shall merge the existing research contacts of the participating chairs to their partners in South-Eastern Europe into a programme of studies, which shall give its members access to libraries, archives and the scientific communities of the respective countries, combining scientific eagerness with a well-structured PhD-programme. It shall open up a view upon the region as a whole and thus look beyond national strictures in order to close the gap between different national cultures, which still have an important impact upon the respective fields of science.
