Controlled oligomerization and polymerization of pentelylboranes

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term from 2011 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 201904859

The project targets on the study of a first synthetic approach and of the reactivity of monomeric parent compounds of the pentelylborans of the formulae [H2EBH2] (E = group 15 element (pentel)) starting from Lewis base(LB)- or Lewis acid(LA)-stabilized monomers of the type H2EBH2LB and LAH2EBH2, respectively. These unprecedented compounds, which carries exclusively hydrogen as substituents on the pentelylborane core, are of great academic interest and by controlled oligomerizations and polymerizations novel classes of compounds with 13/15 element-sequences are obtained which are applicative interesting materials. Inter alia the synthesis of a first arsanylborane polymer is a target of this research. By introducing organic substituents on the pentel atom the solubility of the resulting oligomers/polymers is increased as well as a tacticity of the products is achieved. For oligiomeric products the controlled synthesis of long ionic (cat- and anionic) chain compounds and also of neutral chains with alternating group 15/B atoms are in the focus of interest revealing the analogy to alkane chains. The investigation of the properties of the oligomers/polymers is a motivation of this study. Moreover, the oligomerisation of only by a Lewis base stabilized pentelylborans in the coordination sphere of transition metals is investigated to obtain unprecedented substituent-free ligands of mixed group 13 und 15 elements as monomers and oligomers, respectively. Furthermore, the use of these classes of compounds as single source precursors for EB materials will be investigated.
