GRK 1431: Transcription, Chromatin Structure and DNA Repair in Development and Differentiation
Final Report Abstract
Eine zentrale Frage der Biologie ist, wie die genetisch programmierte Informationsvorlage der DNA-Sequenz in ein komplexes Genexpressionsprogramm umgesetzt wird, das zur Ausbildung verschiedener Zelltypen und letztendlich eines gesamten Organismus führt. Besonderes Augenmerk hat hierbei die zellspezifische Modifikation von DNA und den DNA-organisierenden Proteinen, die entscheidende Prozesse wie Transkription und DNA- Reparatur steuern und regulieren. Das GRK1431 ging dieser Frage gezielt nach, indem es die Expertise von Arbeitsgruppen aus den Forschungsbereichen (1) Transkription und Transkriptionsfaktoren, (2) Transkriptionskontrolle in Entwicklung und Differenzierung, (3) epigenetische Modifikation und (4) DNA-Reparatur und Chromosomen-Segregation komplementär bündelte. Von den dadurch erzielten Synergieeffekten profitierten die Doktorand/innen des GRK, die Forschungsprojekte sowie der Forschungsstandort gleichermaßen. Den Doktorand/innen wurde eine zugleich breite wie vertiefte wissenschaftliche Ausbildung und Promotion in diesem aktuellen Forschungsfeld geboten. Diese wurde durch ein strukturiertes Lehrprogramm, regelmäßige internationale Tagungen und den Austausch mit anderen Forschungsinstitutionen weltweit verstärkt. Die so gestaltete Ausbildung bildete die Basis für erfolgreiche Karriere-Entwicklungen der Graduierten in Industrie und akademischer Forschung. Die strukturierte Zusammenarbeit im GRK hat ebenfalls zu erheblicher Stimulation der Forschungsprojekte geführt, wodurch zahlreiche neue und spannende Erkenntnisse erzielt werden konnten, die durch Veröffentlichungen in hochrangigen Journalen belegt sind. Hervorzuheben sind hier Forschungsbeiträge mit Relevanz für Immunologie, Tumorbiologie und Alterungsprozesse. Nicht zuletzt hat das GRK damit zur Entwicklung einer aktiven und kooperativen Forschungslandschaft am Standort beigetragen, die eine ausgezeichnete Voraussetzung für Nachwuchsförderung und weitere kooperative Initiativen bietet.
