The triple R connection of replication, recombination and repair provided geminiviruses the potential to become one of the most important pathogens of crop plants of the world, mainly in the tropical and subtropical belt. High mutation and recombination rates of these viruses are thought to be the major driving forces of their evolution and thus of their epidemics. Their multiplication relies widely on host genes which will be identified in the proposed project by profiting from the available Arabidopsis thaliana mutants, from virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), and three recently discovered begomovirus isolates and their alphasatellites which infect efficiently and induce only mild symptoms in A. thaliana.
