Elektrospray-Quadrupol-Time-of-Flight-Massenspektrometer

Subject Area Plant Sciences
Term Funded in 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 208680633

Mass spectrometry has become extremely important in biological and life sciences. Like in other universities, MS equipment and specific methods mainly for proteomics and for lipid analytics have been or are currently being established within the University of Cologne at the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC), within the CECAD, and the new MS platform in the Biocenter of the Department of Biology (BIO-MS platform). After the move of the research group of Prof. Dr. Dietmar Schomburg from Cologne to the Technical University of Braunschweig in 2007, experimental/bioinformatics research on metabolic networks and enzymatic function using metabolome analysis/mass spectrometry became largely inexistent in the biological sciences in Cologne. This gap should now at least in part be filled with the technological and methodological portfolio of the BIO-MS platform through establishment of metabolome analysis using an ESI-Q-TOF MS. Moreover, ultrahigh resolution and the possible online coupling to a HPLC or GC system allows for the detection of soluble or gaseous metabolites. This makes this instrument a high-end, state-of-the-art equipment for metabolomics research for the next ten to fifteen years.
