The spin and orbit contributions to the magnetic moments of isolated clusters
Final Report Abstract
In conclusion, the realisation of the proposed GAMBIT setup has been successfully accomplished and integrated into the BESSY user platform. First data on free mass selected clusters demonstrate the importance of quantifying spin and orbital moments as function of temperature in order to analyse the intrinsic magnetic properties of free “ferromagnetic” particles. A clear Langevin-type temperature-dependence of both spin and orbital moment has been established. Our first data demonstrate that the intrinsic orbital moments of small „free“ clusters are enlarged and can not be neglected. The analysis of spin and orbital magnetic moment of free clusters bears high potential for future investigation of application-relevant magnetic storage materials such as magnetic building block clusters, molecular magnets and magnetic biomolecules. XAS data have been demonstrated to deliver structural information on free clusters by comparison with theory. Similar experiments based on linear ion trapping and external magnetic fields have meanwhile been established by other groups verifying the general interest of our results.
