The aim of the priority programme is to utilise the principles of genetically determined biomineralisation processes for the generation of inorganic multifunctional materials. The programme shall offer opportunities for the interdisciplinary cooperation of researchers from a variety of fields including materials science, biology, chemistry and physics. Comprehensive studies ranging from the generation via the structural characterisation up to the properties of the materials in combination with modelling approaches are planned. Owing to the highly interdisciplinary character of the priority programme special attention has to be paid to the support and the integration of young researchers. Based on their initially disciplinary education young academics will be specifically trained for conducting research on molecular bionics. To reach the above mentioned goals the following activities are taken into account:• Organization of biennial Summer Schools• Organization of topical symposia• Start-up funding for young scientists• Training of young scientists by exchange visits• Measures for gender equality• Promotion of networking with international partners• Biennial review colloquia• Creation, maintenance and updating of an internet website
