The Transfer Unit is focussed on the application of advanced modelling tools that were developed within the Collaborative Research Centre 370 "Integral Materials Modelling", to specific topics in industry. The programme also involves 16 industrial partners. The core topics of the individual projects are as follows: The objective of the first project T1 is the numerical prediction of the critical strain and strength of steels at high temperatures after continuous casting accounting for the true chemical composition. The effect of the continuous casting equipment on the mechanical properties is also covered. Such data are essential for the design and control of the industrial casting processes. The main topic of project T2 is the simulation of production and in-service degradation of ceramics coated gas turbine components. In cooperation with manufacturers of gas turbines and coatings the microstructural models and simulation methods developed within the Collaborative Research Centre 370 are transferred to an industrial situation in order to optimise the coating process and to quantify the degradation and damage level. In project T3 the tools developed for process simulation of the manufacture of rolling products are applied to new alloy systems and production processes in order to predict mechanical properties of new products. For this purpose improved physical models for strain hardening and recovery have to be developed and need to be complemented by experiments. The aim of project T4 is the prediction of local mechanical properties like strength and toughness as well as a forecast of residual stresses and warpage in multilayer weld seams of thick plates. The process, the material and the construction are coupled in the model and are implemented in a dedicated software to optimise the production process and the component properties. Finally, an industrially relevant comprehensive model for the process and material dependent formation of microstructure and cavities will be addressed in project T5 by cooperation of several partners of RWTH Aachen University and industry. The model is designed to be utilised for the development of alloys, devices and processes of high-alloyed cast iron.
