The main objectives of the proposed research are (i) to improve the understanding of the processes associated with the interaction of breaking/non-breaking waves and pile groups, and based on this improved understanding (ii) to develop wave load formulae for the prediction of wave loads on a vertical cylindrical pile within a pile group in different arrangements. To achieve these objectives, existing data sets from previous experiments in the Large Wave Flume (GWK) will be re-analysed, new wave flume experiments will be performed and a numerical model will be validated by the experimental data and applied for a more systematic parameter study, thus extending the range of conditions tested in the laboratory. For a more efficient analysis of all the data obtained from both laboratory experiments and numerical simulations, more generic computational tools will also be developed.
